You're about to become addicted to the least expensive way to explore the ocean, freediving. And what better place to take a freediving course in the Philippines, than in beautiful Romblon.
Our two day introduction to freediving class is coordinated by an experienced instructor, right on the sandy shores of Talipasak Beach. You will learn the basic philosophies and skills needed to become a beginner freediver in a group class setting, followed by a practice session in the water with our coach. Dive gear and safety gear is provided, as well as lunch and overnight accommodation included in our intro student package.
If you're looking for an unexplored, less congested paradise to freedive, Romblon will absolutely blow your mind. Whether you're a seasoned Filipino used to diving in Batangas or Panglao, or a traveler coming from abroad, Romblon Freediving offers the one and only guided fundive and boat dive experience.
For groups of 2 or more, our coaches can guide you from a boat, and by shore. Our main fundive package includes the best of both worlds, taking you around hidden fish sanctuaries and Blue Hole on day one, followed by beach dives at stunning coral gardens and underwater caverns on day two from Romblon's pristine white sand beach fronts.
First time freedivers will learn breathing techniques, equalization techniques, proper finning, safety protocol and buoyancy theory on their way to developing proper freediving skills. Our freediving instructor will teach students how to freedive in any environment, regardless of their age, fitness level and experience with swimming. Yes, our course is perfect for panic swimmers, non swimmers, and weak swimmers alike.
*An introductory freediving course is required before joining our fundives.
To feel safe, students are set in small groups with an instructor trainer to descend into a shallow depth in order to become comfortable with fitting their mask and snorkel, bi fins, and basic finning movements. With the assistance of a floatation buoy, the class will then practice holding their breath underwater while pulling themselves on a rope as they descend. The second day of training is more of a fun dive day, as students try to dive deeper, equalize more efficiently and explore the corals and fish beneath the surface.

Freediving is one of the few extreme sports that doesn't require you to be an athlete, because this is an underwater activity that is all about the diver. Sure, there are competitions and accolades associated with deep diving, but becoming a freediver means you learn to better appreciate the ocean, the environment, your body and your mind.
Book NowThere is an unbelievable calming effect underwater, making you more at peace with yourself as you forget about the problems and stress of the outside world. Your first glimpse at the marine life and world below the surface immediately gives you a greater respect for the earth, and all it's living things.
The freediving community in the Philippines is not only friendly and welcoming, but very supportive. It doesn't take long to meet new friends, socialize with like minded people and help each other with their diving progress.
Everyone has a different reason for diving, and sometimes that reason changes over time, so let's jump in now and find out what you will love most about your freediving journey.

Freediving is diving underwater without the assistance of a breathing apparatus and without leaving any footprints on the environment. Here are the topics we cover in our freediving course in Romblon.
A snorkel is used to breathe through your mouth while your head is slightly underwater. A low-volume dive mask is used to see underwater. These two items are essential to any form of diving or snorkeling.
In training, you will likely use short, training fins, made of either silicone or plastic. As you practice your finning skills, you become accustomed to kicking and propelling yourself in the water. It's only when you have the basics down that you graduate to long fins, made of either plastic, carbon or a carbon fiber composite.
A weight belt is sometimes used for those who have trouble submerging their full body in the water. Sometimes weights can help divers who wear wetsuits, or are practicing more efficient free immersion techniques.
Wetsuits can be worn to keep you warmer in cold waters, and provide some protection from sunburn. Many divers use a wetsuit to protect them from jellyfish and plankton, as well as incidental scratches from corals or rock under the sea.
Unlike scuba diving, freedivers and spearfishers don't use oxygen tanks or heavy gear, and can enjoy diving from the shoreline, a boat or practically anywhere, anytime
The first EQ method you will probably learn is called Valsalva. This method requires pinching of the nose manually, but it's effectiveness is limited to more shallow water, usually less than 10 meters.
The hands-free equalization method is a skill that you can try without pinching your nose. There are several ways of accomplishing this, but most people simulate yawning to achieve clearing of the eustachian tubes.
The Frenzel technique is preferred amongst most freedivers because it uses less energy, and allows deep freediving of up to 30 meters or so. This EQ method also requires pinching of the nose, but you will press your tongue against the roof of your mouth while making a letter "K" or "T" sound.
Equalizing while descending in the water is an absolute requirement for freediving. Improper, or lack of EQ can severely damage your ears or sinus cavities, leading to nosebleeds and discomfort while diving.
In class, you will practice your breath hold to see how long you can go without inhaling. The freediving instructor will teach students how to properly fill their lungs with air in a static apnea setting. The more practice you have, the longer your breath hold can be, which is helpful for your dynamic apnea.
Learning to duck dive can be the most challenging part of a freediving course for many students. Perfecting your entry into the ocean is essential to staying underwater longer, descending faster and conserving energy and oxygen.
The freedive coach will likely perform dry training with the class, demonstrating how to fin properly using straight legs and a "scissor-kick" approach. Many new divers will bend their knees as if climbing stairs, or use a frog kick approach. This is not the correct way to maneuver in the sea with longer freediving fins.
You will receive from us a certificate of completion, but this is very different from a Molchanovs Wave 1 certification, an AIDA 2, or any sort of PADI registration. More advanced freediving courses are achievable after you've completed this introduction course, and have become comfortable diving up to at least 10 meters.
NEVER DIVE ALONE. This is the golden rule of freediving, regardless of your dive time or experience. Use the buddy system and be sure the person can assist you in getting help should a freediver blackout, have difficulty breathing or sustain an injury.
